Communicating effectively as a workplace leader, including understanding the context, choosing methods of communication to suit the audience, and following up are crucial. You will learn to take responsibility for the work and performance of others and provide the first level of leadership within the organisation. As a leader, you must have a strong influence on the work culture, values and ethics of the teams you supervise.

Successful completion of the two units of competency outlined below for this short course will earn you a Statement of Attainment in partial completion of BSB42015 Certificate IV in Leadership and Management.

We provide you with three (3) months to complete this course. How long it actually takes will be reflective of the time you are able to dedicate to your studies.

This course could be completed within 15 – 20 hours of study per unit. It may take you less time, it may take you more. That is why we give you three (3) months and all the support you need. The rest is up to you!

BSBMGT401 Show leadership in the workplace

Upon successful completion of this unit, you will:

  • identify the organisation's standards and values, whether stated or implied by the way the organisation conducts its business
  • evaluate own behaviour and performance against these and adjust to achieve required standards
  • develop and implement performance plans and key performance indicators (KPIs) to meet organisation's goals and objectives
  • use established communication channels to raise questions about standards and values that may be damaging to the organisation
  • ensure own behaviour and performance contributes to the integrity and credibility of the organisation
  • facilitate processes to make decisions that are based on:
    • relevant information
    • examination of options and associated risks
    • input from relevant people
  • communicate about making and implementing decisions including:
    • facilitating agreement on the preferred course of action and implementation plans
    • monitoring and feedback on the implementation and impact of decisions

Demonstrate knowledge of:

  • how to identify an organisation's standards and values when they are:
    • stated
    • implied
  • organisational values and expectations of behaviour
  • basic theory of group behaviour
  • the organisation's process for raising questions about standards and values
  • behaviours and performance that would typically be considered damaging to an organisation
  • concepts including:
    • organisational values
    • role modelling
    • integrity and credibility
    • leadership

BSBLDR401 Communicate effectively as a workplace leader

Upon successful completion of this unit, you will:

  • identify the context for communication and adjust approach and responses accordingly
  • create and present clear messages choosing method and mode appropriate to the audience and context, undertake effective two-way communication from the perspective of a team leader
  • identify and record actions required as a result of communication and follow-up in a timely manner

Demonstrate knowledge of:

  • effective management communication characteristics
  • range of electronic and non-electronic communication methods, including situations where they would or would not be used
  • characteristics of effective listening techniques
  • feedback process and methods
  • team leadership communication responsibilities
  • barriers to communication in a workplace context
  • verbal and non-verbal communication characteristics
  • impact of legislation and organisational policies on workplace communication

You will be assessed for these units of competency using a variety of tasks to assess your understanding and skills. A virtual session means you will be one on one with your assessor either answering questions or taking part in a role play, just as you would do in any classroom, only we do it online.

All of our assessments are marked by your assessor within ten (10) working days following the day you submitted your work. You have three (3) attempts for each task to achieve a competency result, with your assessor giving you detailed feedback following each submission.

Requirements

There are no formal requirements. However, learners will need:
  • Sufficient language, literacy and numeracy skills to complete the course
  • Basic computer skills
    • Knowledge of common computing terms and word processing
    • Proficiency with web browser software and sending/receiving e-mail including e-mail with attachment
    • Familiarity with navigating the Internet
  • To meet technical requirements
