New year celebrations usually mean new beginnings and new hope. For others, it means crossing out a list of things to avoid and adopting new, more prolific habits. This is what most people call a “New Year’s resolution”.
For students, the New Year brings about new opportunities to develop better habits to help them in their studies. That said, we’ve come up with a list of top 7 things they might want to put in their New Year’s resolution. Here it goes:
1. Eliminate all distractions
Studies show that the average attention span of a human being now rivals that of a goldfish – 9 seconds. It’s an unavoidable result of progress, the internet, and other byproducts, such as social media. With information travelling at very fast speeds, it gets easy to lose focus and eventually, the passion for worthwhile things, like learning.
The challenge? Rise above the noise by eliminating it completely. Whenever you’re online and going through learning modules about the course you took, make sure to eliminate distractions by closing social media tabs in your browser, putting your messenger app on silent, or go offline on it altogether.
2. Get rid of unhealthy habits
Pigging out, drinking, and partying like there’s no tomorrow can be considered examples of unhealthy habits – when done in excess. In fact, everything done in excess is an unhealthy habit in the making. Remember that moderation is always a good idea.
Other than that, cutting off other unhealthy habits like excessive smoking or eating unhealthy food helps you maintain a better body optimised for learning.
3. Get fit!
Since you’re planning to throw out the bad habits, you might instill new, healthier ones. Running a decent distance each day or subscribing to a new fitness program should keep your body healthy. With a healthier body comes a better mind – studies have shown that exercising on a regular basis can give you extra energy, thus allowing you to sustain more time for studying.
4. Learn at least one new thing a day
You want to write better narratives? Go take writing courses and publish at least one blog post a day. You want to learn how to build a business? Make a point to listen to at least one business podcast or read a good business book every day.
Learning something new everyday gives you a feeling of fulfillment and leaves you hungry for more knowledge – especially if it’s something you’re very passionate about. It also keeps your mind stimulated and, to some extent, helps you develop mental endurance.
5. Come up with a schedule
Time management has always been a crucial issue for some students. This is why it’s an absolute must for you to come up with a daily schedule of the things you do. This keeps you both busy and on track with both your personal life and your life as a student. If you’re working, it’s great to have a schedule set up so you’ll know how to position yourself in terms of time and manpower. At the end of the day, this lessens your stress and it can potentially save you more time to do other things.
6. Set SMART goals
Since you’re going to come up with a schedule, you might as well come up with a set of goals you can follow. These aren’t just regular goals, you have to set SMART goals. SMART stands for specific, measurable, actionable, relevant and time-based. In a nutshell, you just have to declare specific goals with deadlines, an action plan, and a set of milestones that will help you fulfil them.
This gives you direction and a more specific schedule to follow.
7. Do something you’re intimidated by
The New Year provides you with an opportunity for you to step out of your comfort zone and do something you normally won’t do. So make a list of things that usually scare or intimidate you and go do them! Of course, these things have to be good and prolific rather than the opposite. Whether it’s just taking a hiking trip or taking up a course in accounting; if it’s something that scares you, go for it!
Going out of your comfort zone may be uncomfortable and sometimes unbearable, but that’s an experience of you growing. And where there is growth, there’s life, fulfillment, and meaning.
