Re – think Your Career Goals

Do you remember the first time you tried something new, like going to the gym or starting to exercise? It can be uncomfortable, challenging and exhausting doing something you’ve never done before. It’s so easy give up and go back to our comfort zone, but we all know the value and benefits of exercise in improving our physical and mental health and that we should stick to it.

It's the same for our career. It takes time, focus and energy for us to grow and be better. It is often not a comfortable journey to develop and change. Some people fear change and find it hard to try something new and step out of their comfort zones.

Comfort zones - they give us a sense of control, predictability and the simplicity of the way things are. We know what to do when faced with a predictable problem because we have experienced it before. The comfort of working with the same people that we know and what are familiar with is simple and safe. So why change?

As uncomplicated and easy as they are, comfort zones limit our potential and growth. In these zones, we slow down our learning and experiences. Work becomes repetitive and predictable using the same skills for the same types of work that we’ve been doing.

If you’re looking to grow and continue to move your career to reach the learning and growth zones, it’s good to do a career check once in while, and see where you are at in your career. Are you stuck in a comfort zone and need to re-think your career goals? Have you learned enough in your current job and are ready to venture out to a new and exciting next phase? Do you think you have what it takes to take on new and bigger roles in the company you’re working for?

But remember - change doesn’t have to be big and instant. You can make small changes and efforts over time and still be able to grow professionally. If you’re not ready to take a big leap of change, there are ways for you to slowly ease into trying something new. The key is deciding that you need to do it and put in the effort and time, however small, so you can continuously be growing and developing your skills and advancing your career. In this way, you’re not just waiting for opportunities to happen, you create them and you build your way to reach your full potential and ultimate goals.

Learning and growing may not be comfortable but it will definitely be worth it! You’ll see.
