Study Tips to Help Reduce Your Stress Levels

We all feel stress from time to time. You may feel that there may not be enough hours in a day and work and family responsibilities are so demanding. Starting a new course and juggling family and career responsibilities can contribute to everyday stress levels. If left unchecked, stress can lead to health problems.

As part of Stress Awareness Month, we have compiled five study tips that can help you lower your stress levels. These study habits may prove useful in completing your online course.

1. Take control of your environment

Your study space is your centre. Without a proper study space, you will be prone to distractions which can lead to unproductive study time and unnecessary stress. Make sure you have good lighting, feel comfortable and able to focus on your course work. Some people may be comfortable with clutter and some mess, and for others, a clean and organised study space is the only way they can really focus. Do you study better with background music or complete silence? It is important to find out what works for you and set up a good environment for your learning.

2. Take regular breaks

Long hours of study can be tiring and stressful. While some people think it’s best to study for many hours, it can leave you with lower energy and motivation. It is important to take regular breaks. For example, for every 25 minutes of uninterrupted study, take a 5-minute break to have coffee, stretch your legs or perhaps return a phone call. This will help you focus better and eliminate the strain you may feel from studying for long hours. Research has also shown that taking regular breaks helps with long-term knowledge retention.

3. Snack on food rich in energy

Let’s face it, studying can make us feel sleepy at times. While coffee or energy drinks are our go-to stimulant, high doses can lead to stress and anxiety. Reduce your caffeine intake and try other foods that are rich in energy. Bananas, peanut butter, kale, oatmeal, pistachios and Greek yogurt are some of the foods that help boost energy. Almonds are also a great snack rich in magnesium and B vitamins that can help reduce fatigue, improve concentration and boost energy.

4. Evaluate your time

There is a quote by Jim Rohn that says, “Either you run the day or the day runs you”. Simply put, you have to take charge instead of letting your time be left unmanaged. Easier said than done? Well, start by evaluating how you spend your time. What’s keeping you from being productive? What changes, both physically and mentally, can you make to achieve greater productivity? Make the changes and see how they positively impact your behaviour and study routine.

5. Turn your lessons into stories

One of the sources of stress in studying is when it’s hard to understand the course content. It can leave you feeling stuck or frustrated. Some people resort to memorisation, which can be counterproductive. While memorisation can help you remember facts, it doesn’t always result in understanding the knowledge and concepts. What you can do is try to turn your lessons into stories. Create a scenario relevant to your course topic to gain an idea of how concepts work in the real-world setting. In this way, you will remember them better, realise their value and be able to apply them into practical work.
