This short course is Stage 2 of the BSB50120 Diploma of Business.

In this second stage of the BSB50120 Diploma of Business, you will learn about emotional intelligence, sustainability and communication.

You will first learn to develop and use emotional intelligence to increase self-awareness, self-management, social awareness and relationship management in the context of the workplace.

With the increasing awareness about environmental issues, it is considered best practice for a business to develop a sustainability policy to help make sustainability a core mission within their business. In this short course, you will learn to develop, implement and review the implementation of workplace sustainability processes, including processes for consulting and communicating with stakeholders.

The third unit will cover communication skills. As a leader in your organisation, it is essential that effective communication protocols are implemented. Enhance your communication skills and learn to develop, implement and review the implementation of communication protocols through this course.

Successful completion of the three units of competency for this short course outlined below will earn you a Statement of Attainment in partial completion of the BSB50120 Diploma of Business.

BSBPEF502 Develop and use emotional intelligence

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to develop and use emotional intelligence to increase self-awareness, self-management, social awareness and relationship management in the workplace.

The unit applies to individuals who are required to identify, analyse, synthesise and act on information from a range of sources and who deal with unpredictable problems as part of their job role. These individuals may be responsible for leading a team or work area.

Upon successful completion of this unit, you will:
  • Demonstrate emotional intelligence in relation to at least two different work tasks
  • Promote development of emotion intelligence in others on at least one occasion.
In the course of the above, you must:
  • Develop assessment criteria to assess personal emotional strengths and weaknesses
  • Conduct an analysis to identify personal emotional triggers, incorporating feedback from others
  • Analyse and document interactions with co-workers
  • Develop and implement plans for responding to emotional expressions
  • Apply techniques that promote flexibility in interactions with others and show consideration for the emotions of others.

BSBSUS511 Develop workplace policies and procedures for sustainability

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to develop and implement workplace sustainability policies and to modify the policy to suit changed circumstances.

The unit applies to individuals with managerial responsibilities who undertake work developing approaches to create, monitor and improve strategies and policies within workplaces. These individuals also engage with a range of relevant stakeholders and specialists.

'Sustainability' in this unit refers to a broad approach that focuses on the minimisation of an organisation’s social, economic and environmental impact, as well as proactive value creation in these areas.

Upon successful completion of this unit, you will:
  • Develop and implement workplace policies and procedures for sustainability on at least one occasion, including:
    • implementing sustainability policy and procedures into wider organisational policies and procedures
    • consulting and communicating with relevant stakeholders to generate engagement with sustainability policy development, implementation and continuous improvement.
Demonstrate knowledge of:
  • Australian and international standards relating to corporate sustainability
  • Environmental and sustainability legislation, regulations and codes of practice applicable to organisation
  • Internal and external sources of information and their use in planning and developing organisational sustainability policies and procedures
  • Elements required for the development of organisational sustainability policies and processes including:
    • agreed outcomes of the policy and procedures
    • policy timeframes and costs
    • performance indicators
    • activities to be undertaken
    • assigned responsibilities
    • record keeping, review and improvement processes
    • common sustainability issues with organisational systems and procedures
  • Typical barriers to implementing policies and procedures in an organisation and possible strategies to address them.

BSBXCM501 Lead communication in the workplace

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to lead communication in the workplace within any industry.

This unit has a specific focus on the communication skills required for team leaders with responsibility for other workers.

  1. Establish communication protocols
  2. Coordinate effective communication
  3. Present and negotiate persuasively
  4. Review communication practices
Upon successful completion of this unit, you will:
  • Collate research on internal and external communication needs
  • Develop and implement communication protocols in accordance with organisational requirements
  • Present information in a persuasive and professional manner
  • Apply negotiation techniques to reach desired outcomes
  • Address communication challenges for continuous improvement.

You will be assessed for these units of competency using a variety of tasks to assess your understanding and skills. A virtual session means you will be one on one with your assessor either answering questions or taking part in a role play, just as you would do in any classroom, only we do it online.

All of our assessments are marked by your assessor within ten (10) working days following the day you submitted your work. You have three (3) attempts for each assessment task to achieve a satisfactory outcome (100% pass mark), with your assessor giving you detailed feedback following each submission.

We provide you with up to four (4) months to complete this course. How long it actually takes you to complete each unit will be reflective of the time you are able to dedicate to your studies.

There are no formal requirements. However, learners will need:
  • Sufficient language, literacy and numeracy skills to complete the course
  • Basic computer skills
    • Knowledge of common computing terms and word processing
    • Proficiency with web browser software and sending/receiving e-mail including e-mail with attachment
    • Familiarity with navigating the Internet
  • Meet technology requirements
  • Be at least 18 years old or have completed Year 12 if enrolling in a Diploma
