In HR, it is generally accepted that there are six stages in the employee lifecycle: attraction, recruitment, onboarding, development, retention, and separation. In this short course, we cover attraction, recruitment, onboarding, and separation. For development and retention, you may follow this course with the Staff Performance Management short course.

Attracting the right people to your organisation is essential to meet strategic and operational goals. A well-implemented process will ensure your staff are happy and creates a strong foundation for successful long-term working relationships. Learn about job descriptions, selection criteria, conducting interviews, employee and industrial relations, separation and termination and exit interviews.

Successful completion of the units of competency outlined below for this short course will earn you a Statement of Attainment in partial completion of BSB40420 Certificate IV in Human Resource Management.

BSBHRM415 Coordinate recruitment and onboarding

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to develop and implement strategies to source candidates and to assess their suitability for available positions.

The unit applies to individuals working in a human resources job role, as well as those for whom recruitment and onboarding are part of their broader duties.

Upon successful completion of this unit, you will:
  • coordinate the recruitment and onboarding of two candidates.
In the course of the above, you must:
  • Demonstrate the process for screening and interviewing a candidate
  • Communicate effectively with clients and successful and unsuccessful candidates
  • Review job descriptions and use them to support sourcing, selecting and appointing suitable staff
  • Consult with relevant stakeholders to gain approvals
  • Develop selection criteria and interview questions in consultation with relevant stakeholders
  • Obtain referees’ reports
  • Provide a written report or demonstration of an assessment of a candidate’s skills and selection recommendation
  • Secure preferred candidate’s agreement and provide an employment contract.

BSBHRM412 Support employee and industrial relations

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to communicate and implement employee relations (ER) and industrial relations (IR) policies and procedures to effectively represent organisations and employers.

The unit applies to individuals who work in support positions, assisting others in dealing with ER and IR conflicts and issues.

Upon successful completion of this unit, you will: 
  • prepare and support ER (employee relations) and IR (industrial relations) processes for an organisation or work area, on at least two occasions.
In the course of the above, you must: 
  • locate information required to identify relevant legislation, agreements, policies and procedures
  • use effective communication techniques to support the resolution of simple workplace grievances and conflicts
  • provide accurate written and oral advice about industrial matters
  • use strategies to monitor and gather feedback on the implementation of industrial relations policies and procedures.

BSBHRM529 Coordinate separation and termination processes

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to coordinate redeployment, resignation, retirement, dismissal and redundancy, including the conduct of exit interviews.

The unit applies to individuals who take responsibility for overseeing aspects of managing the voluntary and involuntary termination of employment.

  1. Assist development of policies and procedures
  2. Coordinate separation and termination
  3. Coordinate exit interview process
Upon successful completion of this unit, you will:
  • assist development of at least three different policies and procedures to manage all aspects of employment separation and termination according to legislative and organisational requirements
  • on at least one occasion, coordinate the separation or termination of an employee.
In the course of the above, you must:
  • communicate effectively with employees to ensure they are aware of their rights and responsibilities
  • ensure staff have an appropriate skill-sets to conduct terminations
  • use data from exit interviews to suggest organisational improvements.
Nominal hours = 60

You will be assessed for these units of competency using a variety of tasks to assess your understanding and skills. A virtual session means you will be one on one with your assessor either answering questions or taking part in a role play, just as you would do in any classroom, only we do it online.

All of our assessments are marked by your assessor within ten (10) working days following the day you submitted your work. You have three (3) attempts for each assessment task to achieve a satisfactory outcome (100% pass mark), with your assessor giving you detailed feedback following each submission.

We provide you with up to four (4) months to complete this course. How long it actually takes you to complete each unit will be reflective of the time you are able to dedicate to your studies.

In the units list, you will see the government’s nominal hours for each unit, which are their anticipated number of study hours. Our students usually find that their actual study hours are less than this.

There are no formal requirements. However, learners will need:
  • Sufficient language, literacy and numeracy skills to complete the course
  • Basic computer skills
    • Knowledge of common computing terms and word processing
    • Proficiency with web browser software and sending/receiving e-mail including e-mail with attachment
    • Familiarity with navigating the Internet
  • Meet technology requirements
  • Be at least 18 years old or have completed Year 12 if enrolling in a Diploma
